During cold weather ice can accumulate quickly on walkways, handicap ramps, driveways, loading docks, and on the steps leading up to your business. This creates a potentially hazardous situation for anyone trying to access these areas. Preventing the accumulation of ice in these areas can help reduce the risk of serious injury due to a slip and fall.
To clear these areas and keep them accessible during cold weather, entrust The Grounds Guys for commercial ice melting services. Our crews carefully monitor weather conditions and can apply an anti-icing chemical before, during and after a winter storm to effectively prevent ice from bonding with the surface in areas where people walk and/or work.
Initial Evaluation
We start your ice melting service prior to the arrival of precipitation. We come to your business in advance to identify the areas where ice could accumulate and create a hazardous situation. This ensures that your employees and customers are kept safe, and the exterior of your business is maintained. We apply an anti-icing chemical up to 48 hours before a winter storm. This application prevents ice from forming a bond with the surface so it can be easily cleared away. This is a light application that will help prevent the formation of ice, light snow, and frost.
Maintaining a Safe Environment
We start with the safety of your employees and customers. We consider how they will navigate your business by both car and foot. We also evaluate exterior areas that are accessible such as a handicap ramp, loading dock, deck and/or patio. To ensure a safe environment we perform the following:
- Keep entrances, walking paths, common areas, steps, patios, and driving lanes are clear of ice
- Make sure ice does not accumulate in high traffic or work areas
- Promptly remove ice to keep your business accessible in cold weather
Anti-Icing vs De-Icing
A liquid application is typically applied as an anti-icing treatment. This process will help prevent the accumulation of ice in treated areas. Based on weather conditions and the forecast we will apply this treatment up to 48 hours in advance of a storm.
Our de-icing method uses calcium, potassium and magnesium chloride as an ice melt treatment. These products are safer to use on concrete surfaces than sodium chloride (rock salt). They will also effectively melt snow and ice at lower temperatures than rock salt. Since de-icing requires a heavier application to melt ice that has accumulated and compacted, we monitor usage to avoid overapplication, which is unfortunately commonplace with many contractors. For us, more is not better. We make sure to apply only recommended application rates using properly calibrated equipment to ensure we are putting down only the amount needed to do the job.
This process allows us to safely clear away any remaining ice. De-icing applications are mostly applied as melting treatment following accumulation of snow or ice.
We also offer pet friendly products which can be applied as either an anti-icing or de-icing treatment. Ice Melt is normally applied by hand or using a walk behind spreader. Sometimes if the area is larger a UTV spreader may be used.
